Spaces: Where generations of teachers see boundaries and barriers, generations of students see new opportunities for articulation and networking.

Need for guidance

Develop students’ sociolinguistic skills  and foster the responsible use of digital communication

08. Regulate communication:  Detail work instructions methodically, define a question and answer space and work submission space, set communication rules (language register, interaction methods, etc.). You can e.g. offer students the opportunity to write letters to/with isolated elderly people.

Need for feedback

Split the online class to promote online interaction

09. Maximise interaction: Optimise interaction spaces to give each student the maximum opportunity possible to interact orally (virtual class) and in writing (chat, forum) with the teacher and other students. Students need feedback.

Learning how to make choices

Let students make choices and help them justify them

10. Share readings and playlists (songs, films and series): Build a virtual media library. Students are asked to justify their choices and formulate an opinion on their favourite works in the form of pop-up bubbles.

Need for interaction

Create a digital space for online encounters with foreign correspondents

11. Strengthen interaction and mediation: Moderation, reciprocal mentoring, etc. there are many ways to use a common platform. The Twinspace platform (eTwinning) e.g. offers many possibilities. See also EOL matrix field 3.1. “Learning with others”

Standardise tools and spaces used within the teaching team of a class

12. Clearly delimit spaces and uses: Choose with the pupils a tool per need: a tool for teaching (video teaching, synchronous exchange space), a tool for asynchronous communication (email, forum, etc.), a space deposit (padlet, etc.)…

13. Combine things: Articulate the proposed activity with a tutorial (work method, writing method, video tutorial, etc.), a framework (textbook, dictionary, guide, list, etc.) and a response space (Word file, table, drop space, etc.)

Need to expand one’s horizon

Enhance compassion and help students understand otherness

14. Escape the effects of confinement: Make students travel in time (historical perspective) and in space (discovery of other places and cultures) especially in narrative forms (Bildungsroman, road movie, etc.), expand their horizon by networking with a partner class abroad.
