Moodle

Principal function(s): Course management

Moodle is a free Learning Management System (LMS) or a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). It is an application that allows creating online activities for students, storing materials for them, managing students’ grades, etc. Essentially, Moodle is a tool that enables the creation of website environments for classes and courses. It needs to be installed on a web server. Therefore, schools ought to agree to install Moodle on their web servers, so a technician’s help may be needed. Evaluation: Moodle is a useful course management system. It is adaptable enough to be used with all ages of students (from primary education to adult education and training) and all learner types (audio, visual, learning by doing). With Moodle, you can bring (authentic) material into the classroom relatively simply. Privacy-wise, Moodle is relatively safe to use. Teachers choose whom to enroll in their courses and students access the courses via a username and password.

Cost: Free with registration for single classes + Paid for multiple classes

Latest addition to the ICT-REV inventory

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... Plus d'info
