Audacity ☆

Principal function(s): Audio recording

A tool for recording and editing sound files. It is free and open source. Among others, Audacity allows the editing of multi-track audio. Evaluation: A valuable tool for numerous audio-based tasks. It features many functions and may seem slightly complex at first. However, once the ‘how-to’ is mastered, using the software becomes relatively easy. Audacity lends itself to many engaging pedagogical and didactic usages. Educators can for example ask their pupils or students to create a recording about a topic of their liking and thus compel them to improve their speaking and pronunciation skills while working on a topic they are passionate about.

Cost: Free without registration. Requires installation for its use.

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... Plus d'info
