Mixxer

Principal function(s): Virtual Exchange

A free educational website for language exchanges via WhatsApp, Skype, and, Zoom. Users can, therefore, find language tandems and talk online. Users can create blog entries in their target languages and receive feedback from other users/native speakers. The idea is to connect language learners from around the world and to help one another in the language learning process. Evaluation: Mixxer can be a useful tool for teachers as they can help foster the speaking skills of the students by finding language tandems from all around the world. A way to do so would be to create a group composed of students and invite native speakers from other communities to join, thus enabling their students to communicate in their target language. Mixxer is a good way to expose students to organic language use and communication. Verification is needed to create a group as a teacher, providing some level of security. No installation is required, although users have to set up an account to use the platform. Privacy concerns about (underaged) students being in contact with foreigners should be taken into consideration. Mixxer is basically a meeting point for language learners looking for a language tandem or language practice.

Latest addition to the ICT-REV inventory

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... Plus d'info
