Speak & Improve

Principal function(s): Autonomous learning

Speak & Improve is a tool which helps English language learners improve their speaking and pronunciation skills by answering questions asked by an AI-generated robot. It is being developed by the University of Cambridge and is currently a research project. Evaluation: Speak & Improve is a useful tool to encourage students to practise their spoken English and to help increase their confidence in speaking. A suggestion for use would be to ask students to submit an audio recording of their chats with Speak & Improve, and then to work on their speaking and pronunciation after hearing themselves speak. Speak & Improve also provides an orientative grade of the students’ CEFR speaking level by analysing their responses, although this is not always accurate.

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... Plus d'info
