Jitsi

Principal function(s): Video conferencing

Jitsi is an easy-to-use open-source web-conferencing tool. Users can start calls in their browsers with no need to register by just putting in a meeting name. After that users can ask others to join with the generated codes and/or passwords. The tool allows users to share their screens with other participants, and stream and record their calls. Another feature is the possibility of raising the hand to indicate the willingness to speak. Jitsi also allows for tablet or phone participation, although the app needs to be downloaded onto a device therefore. Evaluation: Jitsi a suitable tool for people with strong privacy concerns that still want to use a videoconferencing tool but are sceptical about Skype or Zoom. Due to the extremely easy setup of a virtual room, it is a valuable tool as well for people who desire to create a meeting on the spot. Overall, it is an excellent alternative to other more well-known videoconferencing tools, and it does not raise any privacy concerns.

Respect for privacy Does the tool require registration? Who can see my data? Can I remain anonymous?

High. 8x8, which operates Jitsi, does not ask for personal information and does not retain any personal data. When it collects data, it uses it to identify and troubleshoot problems and to improve the service. Therefore, Jitsi is one of the most privacy-friendly videoconferencing tools, and its privacy section is written in a straightforward, informative way. Jitsi has an entire website elaborating on the complexities of its security measures, more so given that it is an open-source platform. Overall, these seem satisfactory. Jitsi’s privacy policy does not mention compliance with the GDPR. See more here and here.

Latest addition to the ICT-REV inventory

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... Plus d'info
