Duolingo

Principal function(s): Autonomous learningGame apps

Duolingo is an app that helps learners improve their language knowledge. It guides the user through a learning pathway with steps that build on one another. Once you finish one step, you are allowed to go to the next one, but from time to time you will have to refresh your knowledge by retaking a quicker version of passed steps. The app is gamified, so that the user is pushed to try to learn everyday. Evaluation: The gamified style of the app is successful in encouraging users to keep learning a bit every day. Nevertheless, this can also be demotivating for users who fall off the track. The idea of learning by repetition and deduction also seems to work well in favour of retaining information.

Latest addition to the ICT-REV inventory

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... Plus d'info
