Blabberize

Principal function(s): Audio recording

Blabberize makes it possible "to speak" through a picture. Users can upload pictures and select any area of it to be set as the "mouth". This "mouth" moves and acts like a real mouth while the recorded voice is played. Evaluation: A simple, user-friendly, creative, and fun-to-use tool. Teachers can use Blabberize to encourage students to speak since it may be less threatening and more fun to speak through a cartoon. With its creative visuals, this tool could be very engaging for primary and secondary school students. Very basic IT skills are required for its use.

Cost: Free without registration + paid options

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
