Hero Forge

Principal function(s): Game apps

Hero Forge is an online, user-friendly avatar creator. This tool allows teachers and learners to tap into their creativity by designing virtual characters or alter egos that can be used in learning activities. Thanks to Hero Forge's multiple features and 3D technology, learners can choose the species and gender of their avatar, along with hair and eye colour and much more. Evaluation: Hero Forge is a very interesting tool to make classes more creative and engaging. Language learning activities can benefit from a tool like Hero Forge, as they can easily integrate the creation of heroes within topics such as fighting climate change, ancient civilizations of the world and so on. Moreover, creating avatars with Hero Forge is totally free and the tool permits saving heroes and sharing them. For a fee, users can purchase a 3D plastic or even bronze version of their avatars, although this is a feature that most teachers and learners will not be interested in using.

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
