Flippity

Principal function(s): Flashcard creators

Flippity is a free online tool that allows you to create interactive flashcards or games, based on Google Spreadsheets. Templates are provided so that teachers only need to access the website and choose the spreadsheet they like. Each spreadsheet comes with a set of instructions that will explain how to turn the document into pedagogically useful material for your lessons and customise it. You also have the option to create materials directly in your browser if you don't want to use your Google account, but the options are more limited. There is an extensive troubleshooting page. Evaluation: Flippity is a straightforward tool to make classes more interactive and fun. It is easy to use and has a wide range of activities to choose from.

High. Flippity’s privacy policy is very simple: no personal data is abused, misused, shared or sold since they do not have any user information in the first place. It can only access data publicly published on Google Drive. No data ever gets uploaded, downloaded, saved or stored on Flippity services and, as a consequence, deleting the spreadsheet upon which Flippity is operating means deleting all the data Flippity can access. Flippity’s privacy policy does not elaborate on security. It does not mention compliance with the GDPR. See more here and here.

Latest addition to the ICT-REV inventory

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
