Radio Garden

Principal function(s): Streaming/radio services

Radio Garden is a suitable tool for students to practise and improve their pronunciation and listening skills by listening to music, interviews and much more in different languages. Users just have to click on the desired part of the world where to “travel” and select a radio station from the offered list. Specific radio stations can also be searched. Evaluation: Radio Garden is a great online app for language learners to expose themselves to authentic audio material such as songs or interviews in the language(s) they are learning. The only drawback is that the mobile app contains pop-up ads. The web version does not require signing up, making surfing on the platform completely effortless.

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
