Anki

Principal function(s): Autonomous learningFlashcard creators

Anki is a flashcard tool that helps learners memorise facts, words, and more. It supports images, audio, and video and can be synced with other devices, such as smartphones or tablets. It can also be installed on a PC or be used online by setting up an account. Evaluation: A valuable tool for memorising facts and words, thus being potentially useful for any kind of subject or language. Pupils and students can use it to record and store unknown words in their target language and to later test their knowledge, while teachers can share flashcards with students to study individually at home or recreate a quiz in the classroom. Anki is thus a suitable tool for both flashcards and quiz creation. Since it supports video and audio, Anki can also be used for enhancing language skills such as listening and pronunciation, being therefore fitting for language teaching and learning. It is nevertheless mainly directed towards learning vocabulary. Average IT skills are a prerequisite for using Anki.

Cost: Free for all operating systems but iOS, for which the lifetime usage cost is $24.99.

Latest addition to the ICT-REV inventory

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
