This tool was developed within the framework of a cooperation agreement between the European Centre for Modern Languages and the European Commission

Principal function(s): Story creators

User-friendly comic creator. Users can choose from a selection of templates; comic strip graphic novels or storyboard. Comics are customisable with a variety of different character templates and backgrounds available. One can add speech bubbles, and change characters’ facial expressions, poses and outfits. Backgrounds can also be modified by moving or deleting certain props. Evaluation: The free version is quite satisfying. The site is easy to use and suitable for all ages. Once a comic has been created it can also be saved and shared online. Pixton would be worth trying for creative writing activities. Creating the pictures may take time but also be motivating. Setting up an avatar is a suitable task for using basic description vocabulary. The interface is available in English, Spanish, and French interface. In the Educator mode, one can find suggested class activities.

Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
