Mentimeter

Principal function(s): Poll and survey creatorsQuiz/exercise makers

Mentimeter allows you to create quizzes, polls, scales, slideshow presentations, and word walls. The teacher can project these on a screen and students can vote or write their opinion anonymously using a code automatically provided by the software. The responses are instantly registered and the whole classroom can see the results at the same time as the voting takes place. Everyone gets to vote only once, apart from open-ended questions. Students can use either their notebooks or their mobile devices to participate. Evaluation: The fact that responses can be submitted anonymously allows teachers to, for instance, ask who has done their homework or who understood the class content and students can answer without fear of being shown up. Furthermore, the word wall option can also be useful to encourage shy students to share their opinions in brainstorming sessions, since questions can be answered at the same time publicly and anonymously. Asking for 3 words feedback from participants and displaying everyone’s instantly as a word cloud works well. Finally, Mentimeter could be an interesting tool to check students’ knowledge before a test, so that the teacher can identify where more input is needed and which content has been well understood. On the other hand, anonymity might encourage some students to play pranks.

Latest addition to the ICT-REV inventory

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
