This tool was developed within the framework of a cooperation agreement between the European Centre for Modern Languages and the European Commission

Principal function(s): Course management

ClassDojo is an app that aggregates tools for teaching and managing classrooms. Teachers can, for instance, remind students about their tasks, display the daily schedule, play background music, arrange groups, and even measure the noise in the classroom and incentivize self-management. Teachers can create private groups for each class and communicate with students through them. Each student can show their work by sending pictures and other messages. A function also allows teachers to contact guardians or parents privately or in a group. The app offers instant translation of these messages in more than 30 languages. Evaluation: ClassDojo delivers everything it claims to offer and the company is concerned about user privacy. The interface is intuitive and the app can be used in different languages. Unfortunately, it seems to target exclusively early-age education, since adolescents might not feel comfortable using an app with colorful funny characters and having their guardians/parents so easily in touch with their teachers.

Interface User-friendliness/complexity of the tool´s interface

English and other languages

Respect for privacy Does the tool require registration? Who can see my data? Can I remain anonymous?

High. ClassDojo mainly collects personal data to improve its services, although it shares user data with some third-parties. ClassDojo does not sell or rent user information to third-parties, and does not allow third-party advertising. Moreover, personal information collected from students is never used for behaviorally-targeted advertising to students and is erased in case of account inactivity after 12 months. Interestingly, ClassDojo has a two-tier privacy policy, where privacy guarantees for pupils are more comprehensive. Its privacy policy is extensive and easy to understand, at least if focusing in the “Basically,” summary sections. ClassDojo complies with GDPR. See more here.

Saving work for future use Possiblity to save your or others´ work for reuse/reproduction

Tailorability (If so, how?) Possibility of the tool to be used for a range of different activities (e.g. to what extent you can organize a project assignment with a central activity based on this tool)

Teachers can create and adapt content for each class and the variety of functions of the app allows flexibility.

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
