Google Earth

Principal function(s): Autonomous learning

By using this famous Google platform with students you may visit any place in the world without leaving the classroom. A 3D view option is now available in some parts of the world for taking an even closer look. Evaluation: Apart from its traditional map use, Google Earth offers some very suitable options for bringing to the classroom. Some of them are virtual travel itineraries, which are already set up in the tool. These can be browsed by category (Nature, Culture, History...). There is also the option of letting Google select a random destination for you. Note that Google Earth needs to be downloaded to be able to create a trip.

Cost: Free without registration

Low. Google is well known for using user data for advertising and marketing purposes, but it does offer a high degree of security for data. In fact, Google Earth’s introduction raised a lot of privacy concerns since it displays people’s houses and faces, sometimes without blurring, and without explicitly asking for consent. Google Earth’s privacy policy does not state compliance with the GDPR. See more here..

Latest addition to the ICT-REV inventory

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
